Locked In For Now

If you visit www.cardzforkidz.org on your cell phone, one of the first things you’ll see is a link to this blog section. Over the years I’ve produced some helpful blogs with examples of what to include on the cards in various languages, recognition for various groups, and the background of why the scholarship is distinctive and personally valuable. The tone may have slightly changed, but one thing that’s definitely changed is the frequency. As we’ve grown – and I have increased outside responsibilities - it’s been a bit more difficult to provide these inside stories on what’s taking place on our end. We’re having discussions with another team who may help produce engaging content, but thankfully I decided to stay awake during this 12-hour flight back from Nigeria to watch a classic, A Goofy Movie (and watched Mufasa, The Lion King on the way there 😉).
During the trip, I noticed something that made me think. I mentioned it before, but looking at our Card Making Groups page is a great way for kids to practice their alphabet – ranging from GM to PLS. Then this trip to Nigeria was with my father, who most of his career of 25+ years worked for two companies known as acronyms. Well, technically, towards the end, the second acronym company was purchased by another acronym. He retired from there to start his own company, Cincar. It’s an acronym for the first letter of my parents’ and 4 siblings’ names (I’m the I).
What really made me think about this was riding around Lagos and seeing a bunch of KFC restaurants. Not once did I see the full name I grew up with, Kentucky Fried Chicken. I even

referred to that when I reached out to update Sherry after we discussed a potential trip out there.
Why did Kentucky Fried Chicken change their name?
People aren’t as familiar with Kentucky globally
Negative connotation of fried foods and health
They serve more than chicken
All of the above (OR) None of the above
Thinking about KFC, what about Cardz For Kidz? Or as noted in our hashtag during COVID, CFK - #WorkTogetherCFK.

It would make sense to shorten it for the following reasons:
We send cards to people of all ages – more than just kids.
We’ve donated more than cards (e.g., jewelry, entertainment systems).
We have a scholarship that doesn’t directly connect to our current nonprofit partners – recipients are usually 18+ (not kids) and it’s not a card.
While there are some good points to follow the trend and potentially just use letters, I don’t think it’s worth pursuing currently. First, we’re still trying to express our gratitude to the lawyers who helped us get the certification, and the others who helped get our name and logo copyrighted. According to the government, our name is Cardz for Kidz, NFP. We try to post things on social media as Cardz For Kidz to align with our logo and to make it seem that the For is a portion of our name rather than an explanation of where the cards are going. Also, although we’ve been around for 15 years, we’re still an emerging organization and trying to build awareness. Including both the word Card and Kid in our name may help us while people are searching online through different online platforms. In summary, it may make sense to follow the trend and shorten our name to the acronym, but we’re LOCKED IN FOR NOW to our “full” name – Cardz For Kidz.
